Two instruments the Fadeometer 18FT with a carbon arc lamp and the Xenotest 250 with a xenon lamp, were compared for their usefulness in light stability testing of solid dosage forms. Three drug substances [zimelidine dihydrochloride, remoxipride hydrochloride and FLA 870 (a substituted salicylamide methane sulfonate salt)] with different light sensitivities, formulated into tablets, were used in the tests. The same type of discoloration as in sunlight measured with tristimulus colorimetry could be produced by both test instruments. The rate of discoloration in the Xenotest was similar to that in sunlight, and was much faster in the Fadeometer. The Fadeometer was considered less suitable than the Xenotest for testing substances with high light sensitivity.
