Platelet counts were followed on 5 successive days after giving bleomycin-including chemotherapy in a total of 19 patients and compared with similar counts in 11 patients given chemotherapy without bleomycin. Bleomycin appears to cause a rapid decrease in platelet counts with a nadir after 2 days, while the non-bleomycin-treated patients did not show this decrease. The difference on the day of nadir was statistically significant. Heparin did not prevent the observed phenomenon. A possible association between the rapid decrease in platelet counts and development of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is discussed.
