Culture fluids from submerged cultures were assayed for cellulolytic activity against the model substrates carboxymethylcellulose-Na and Standard Whatman cellulose, and natural substrates (celluloses from pine bark and sawdust). The cellulolytic activity of the spp. examined was highly differentiated and a high substrate specificity of the cellulase complexes could be determined. Not all the fungi produced EC 3.2.1.4. endo-1,4- beta -glucanase under the culture conditions employed but all produced a complex of EC 3.2.1.4. exo-1,4- beta -glucanases. The fungi were also able to degrade, to a varied extent, the higher forms of cellulose.
