Importance of immunological shifts in the development of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular pathology in children and adolescents

A definite sequence was found in the changes of immunoreactivity in the course of diabetes mellitus development in children and adolescents. The subjects with disturbed glucose tolerance are marked by the presence of autoimmune reactions to the insular tissue of the pancreas and to endogenous insulin, by a decrease in the number and functional activity of T lymphocytes, a lowering in the lysozyme and IgG levels. The disease manifestations are accompanied by further inhibiton of cellular immunity with a concurrent enhancement of the body sensitization to insulin, activation of non-specific humoral immunity. The shifts under consideration grow on during metabolism decompensation and as the disease progresses. Immunologic shifts are of pathogenetic importance in the development of cardiovascular pathology that attends diabetes mellitus. Levamisole produces a beneficial effect on cellular immunity.
