Pathogenicity of Candida paratropicalis

Four cases of disseminated infection due to C. paratropicalis [C. tropicalis] [RMVM 16, 2738] are reported in immunocompromised patients. An additional 5 cases are reviewed to establish the clinical relevance of this yeast. C. tropicalis was isolated from blood and several other body sites. Although the isolates tested were sensitive in vitro to amphotericin B and flucytosine [5-fluorocytosine], significant morbidity and mortality were associated with the infections. The yeast known as Candida paratropicalis is essentially similar to C. tropicalis in morphology and in most of its physiological reactions. That it is as virulent as other pathogenic species of Candida is attested by the fully documented cases of Candida septicaemia described in this paper.Rosalinde Hurley.
