The outbreak, due to type O, in March 1981, affected 34 of 38 sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) and two gayals (Bos frontalis). The clinical signs were similar to those commonly observed in cattle. One deer died; the other cases recovered. No clinical signs developed in several other deer species, or antelopes, llama or dromedary kept in separate enclosures. The source was considered to be an outbreak of FMD (type O) in cattle in the vicinity of the zoo.
