Direct immunofluorescence was used to assess the presence of IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, C1q [complement component 1q], C3c, C4 and fibrinogen deposits in the human aortic atherosclerotic wall. Samples of thoracic aortae were obtained from 46 adults. Eight samples from children, free of atherosclerosis, were also used. Specific yellow-green fluorescence appeared in the intima and media of 94% of the samples for IgG, 67% for C1q, 33% for C3c and 41% for C4 deposits. These immune deposits may be related to an atherogenetic immunologic mechanism.
