Isolation of Clostridium difficile from pigs

C. difficile was isolated from necrotic lesions in the colon of two emaciated 8-week-old pigs with mild scour that had been fed a grower ration containing olaquindox. The clostridium was isolated by incubation in 0.2% paracresol broth for 3 days at 37 deg C before subculturing on to plates of sheep blood agar incubated strictly anaerobically for 3 days at 37 deg C. Escherichia coli E4 and Salmonella typhimurium, also isolated from these pigs, were not thought to be the cause of the lesions.
