Evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction using a rectilinear scanner

A study was undertaken in order to overcome certain disadvantages in the existing radioisotopic techniques for the assessment of cardiac functions. A cardiac gating device, a very essential requirement for calculations of ejection fraction of the ventricles, was attached to a fast rectilinear scanner. The scanner was first used to delineate the cardiac silhouette and then with the detector head stationary ejection fraction measurements of the left ventricle were calculated and compared with values obtained on a gamma camera for validation. There was a good correlation between the 2 observations. This device eliminates any doubt on the proper positioning of the external probe and offers other advantages like simplicity and availability of equipment in a Department of Nuclear Medicine.
