Sunburn lesions in koi carp

Skin lesions developed on the dorsal aspect of white, non-pigmented areas of fins and epithelium of koi carp within four days of being moved to an outdoor pond of clear water during sunny weather. The lesions resolved when the fish were moved to water containing suspended algae or surface vegetation. Histological examination revealed lesions identical to those reported in fish exposed to ultraviolet rays.
