Fatal toxicosis in pet birds caused by an overheated cooking pan lined with polytetrafluoroethylene

The deaths of three pet caged birds were associated with the overheating of a cooking pan lined with polytetrafluoroethylene, a fluorocarbon polymer. This plastic coating, stable and safe under conditions for normal use, emits toxic fumes at (>260 deg C) temperatures. Gross and microscopic lesions were limited to the respiratory tract. There was severe acute hemorrhagic pneumonitis.
