A new dosage form of indomethacin. Pharmaceutical profile of an oral form with osmotically controlled release

To provide more reliable relief of arthritis and help in reducing adverse reactions, a gastrointestinal therapeutic system (G.I.T.S.) actuated by osmosis was devised, incorporating a soluble salt of indomethacin as the active agent. This technologically unique formulation releases the drug at a constant rate over a predetermined period of time. The development of the sodium indomethacin trihydrate G.I.T.S. is described, its pharmacokinetic properties compared with those of conventional oral formulations and studies in arthritic disease conducted among patients in 23 countries are summarized.
