ABO blood groups and infections with human malarial parasites in vivo and in vitro

Comparison of the distribution of ABO blood groups among Black Africans, Europeans and Asians infected with Plasmodium spp. and among uninfected control groups (figures obtained from the literature) revealed no association between ABO blood groups and malaria. In in vitro cultures, blood cells of groups A, B, AB and O were equally susceptible to invasion by P. falciparum and supported multiplication.
