Granulocytopathy in a Holstein heifer

A yearling purebred Holstein heifer had a history of stunted growth, poor physical condition and the presence of a chronic granulomatous lesion on the muzzle. Routine laboratory tests revealed hypergammaglobulinaemia and a prominent leukocytosis due to neutrophilia with a left shift and lymphocytosis. Lymphocytes from the heifer had normal blastogenic responsiveness to phytohaemagglutinin, concavalin A, and pokeweed mitogen. Neutrophils isolated from the blood of this heifer were defective in their ability to migrate under agarose, reduce nitroblue tetrazolium, ingest Staphylococcus aureus, and iodinate protein. The neutrophils had a normal ability to mediate antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity.
