The development of the nose following trauma in the growing stage

In a longitudinal study, esthetic and functional sequelae after nasal fracture in 49 patients during the growth period had been analysed. The results were estimated according to the following criteria: extent of trauma, timing of trauma and mode of therapy. The sequelae of severe fractures were determined primarily by the extent of initial trauma. In case of minor trauma, the long-term results were influenced by age factor and mode of treatment. In adolescents good cosmetic results were obtained by restoration of the integrity of nasal structures. In infantile trauma, the realignment of the structures yielded good functional but poor cosmetic results. In untreated infants good cosmetic results were paid at the expense of insufficient nasal function.
