Prostaglandins in the pathogenesis of food intolerance

Prostaglandins seem to have cytoprotective effects in the upper bowel and are released in increased amounts in patients with abnormal peristalsis and diarrhoea. Drugs which interfere with prostaglandin synthesis often prevent the symptoms of food intolerance and have been reported as improving food-related symptoms in the irritable bowel syndrome.
