Isolation and identification of Chlamydia psittaci from collared doves (Streptopelia decaocto)

During the winter of 1981-82 several emaciated S. decaocto found dead at Weybridge with severe keratoconjunctivitis and enlarged, congested liver and spleen yielded C. psittaci. Positive CF antibody titres were found in 12 of 17 S. decaocto and all of 15 feral pigeons (Columba livia) captured alive in the vicinity; one of three pools of cloacal swabs from the S. decaocto also yielded Chlamydia, though three pools from the feral pigeons were negative. A pool of intestines from eight wood pigeons (Columba palumbus) from the same area also yielded Chlamydia.
