Faecal examination of 833 children aged between 13 and 15 years from a school in Mexico City revealed intestinal parasites (including commensal protozoa) in 505 (60.6%). Boys were more frequently infected (59.2% of 299) than girls (40.8% of 206). Multiple infections (up to 6 parasites) were common (in 51%); most had 2 or 3 species (in 35% and 12% respectively). The commonest pathogens were Entamoeba histolytica (in 29.5% of girls and 28.5% of boys), Giardia lamblia (18.2 and 18.9%), Ascaris lumbricoides (4.6 and 3.5%) and Hymenolepis nana (3.5 and 5.6%).
