Pseudallescheria boydii infection after bone marrow transplantation

A case is reported in a 39-yr-old man who died 25 days after bone marrow transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Autopsy results showed nodular, bilateral pneumonia and a single large pulmonary embolus containing fungal elements was found in the lower lobe of the right lung. P. boydii was cultured from pulmonary secretions. The kidneys contained fungal abscesses and the epicardium, pericardium and myocardium showed fungal involvement.
