In Madhya Pradesh, India, metronidazole was given at 400 mg daily for 10 days to each of 10 active guinea worm cases, mebendazole at 1 g daily for 10 days to another 10 cases and a further 10 cases were given yeast tablets as placebos. Both drugs promoted rapid healing of the ulcer with earlier expulsion of worms than in the control group but had no effect on worms emerging subsequently.
