A white woman 51 years old showed signs of bleeding with defective platelet function after 2 years on haemodialysis. Her vitamin C intake was well below the recommended daily allowance and her plasma and leucocyte ascorbic acid concentrations were low. Treatment with vitamin C tablets gave rapid recovery. Because of dietary restrictions of citrus fruits and leafy vegetables in patients with renal failure and the effect of dialysis on water-soluble vitamins, a vitamin C supplement of 250 to 500 g daily in the diet is recommended.
