An evaluation of the contribution of body protein to the daily resting metabolic expenditure, RME, was made in patients divided into several categories. There was no significant difference in the RME of 907, 857 and 969 kcal per sq. m between surgical patients before and after operation and a group with peritonitis, but RME of 1046 kcal per sq. m in patients with soft tissue injuries was significantly different from 1388 kcal per sq. m in those with burns.
