In this general article emphasis is laid on the need for adequate planning and on aspects of building design that might combat mastitis (e.g. by minimizing faecal contamination of the udder, especially immediately after milking), allow adequate lying space, and combat lameness (e.g. by avoiding sudden changes in floor level, and roughening floor surfaces to avoid slipping). A layout for a 90-cow dairy unit is included.
