Results of a comprehensive health survey in the Durbanville district, August - September 1980

There was a health survey in Durbanville district, Western Cape, South Africa, in August and September 1980. Of 2844 adults questioned 2125 were in a good, 663 in a fair and 11 in a poor state of nutrition and 18 were alcoholics; of 3241 adults 0.6% were malnourished and 0.6% were alcoholics. Among 2956 children 3.7% had dental caries and that disorder was considered to be rampant; malnutrition was not a marked feature, with 2.8% of children underweight. Factors aiding the survey included the cooperation of the farmers and the availability of the farm labourers to attend clinics when necessary. Results published in the 1980 Annual Report of the Medical Officer of Health Divisional Council of the Cape, attracted much public interest and signs of wishing to be involved in self-help.
