Detection of newborn infants at risk for congenital toxoplasmosis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Blood samples were taken from 1032 newborn infants and tested for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by indirect immunofluorescence (IF). 655 (63.5%) were IgG seropositive with titres of 1:16 to 1:1024. In 15 such cases (1.4%) there were also reactions for IgM (1:16 to 1:64). These 15 cases were considered likely candidates for congenital infection. 11 of 13 placentas examined showed inflammation. 4 placentas showed cysts like T. gondii and, of these, 3 showed clinical signs of toxoplasmosis. The other 11 infants were apparently normal as regards toxoplasmosis.
