A preliminary study was designed to estimate the prevalence of dental and skeletal fluorosis in 2 villages, and to examine the fluoride (F) level in the drinking water and its correlation with fluorosis prevalence. The survey examined 2159 subjects; dental mottling (but no skeletal fluorosis) was found in 24.9%. Dental fluorosis prevalence was low in children under age 5, but notably increased thereafter to a maximum at ages 11-15 (beyond which, there was a gradual incidence decline). Prevalence was higher among males than females, and higher in natives than in immigrants to the study area. The F level in drinking water wells ranged from 0.2-2.1 ppm (mean, 0.9 ppm), with a positive correlation found between F drinking water level and dental fluorosis. (wz)
