A total of 2500 primary and secondary school students living in rural areas with high content of fluorine in drinking water were investigated according to the uniform standard method (1982) for the investigation and diagnosis of dental fluorosis and dental caries. The results show: 1. Those born and lived a long time in the area with high-fluorine water may show dental fluorosis. The higher degree of fluoridation of water, the higher the incidence and the more serious teeth damage. 2. Fluorine may prevent teeth from dental caries, but if the level of fluorine in water exceeded 1.5 ppm, the incidence of dental caries will increase gradually with an increment of fluoridation. 3. The incidence of temporary teeth fluorosis was lower than that of permanent teeth fluorosis. The degree of teeth damage may be from mild, moderate to severe. 4. It is recommended that the standard of fluoridation of water should be between 0.5 and 0.7 ppm in north China.
