Samples of adipose tissue from people in South Africa without known occupational exposure were analysed for DDT and DDT-derived material; BHC alpha-, beta-, and gamma-isomers; dieldrin and heptachlor epoxide. For the general population, total DDT-derived material in the adipose tissue was 6.37 and total BHC 2.41 ppm. These values are lower than those for Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Storage of total DDT-derived material increased with age, significantly in Bantu males.
