Using data from the literature, tables and graphs show the normal values for erythrocyte volume (EV), plasma volume (PV), blood volume, total haemoglobin (THb), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), haematocrit (Hk), and their interrelationships in respect of age (up to 50 days), body weight and iron supplementation. The relationships with erythropoiesis and salt and water balance are discussed. The following normal values are proposed: Hb 11.5-13.5 g.dl-1, Hk 36-42%, EV 26-34 ml.kg-1 body weight, PV 45-55 ml.kg-1 body weight, THb 8.0-12.0 g.kg-1 body weight.
