Occurrence of eperythrozoonosis in calves

In a cattle farm situated in the province of Cuneo, 3 severe cases of eperythrozoonosis were observed in 1980 in calves 5 to 6 months old. In all 3 of the animals, the course of the illness was chronic and ended finally 40-50 days after the appearance of the first symptoms. Essentially they were represented by anaemia associated with icterus, a run-down-condition and an increased size of the palpable lymph nodes. The laboratory tests carried out on one calf confirmed a severe haemolytic anaemia. The diagnosis was verified by experimental reproduction of the disease (injection of blood of a sick animal) in a splenectomized calf.
