Fatal pulmonary embolism complicating percutaneous liver biopsy--case reports

Two cases of fatal pulmonary embolism complicating blind percutaneous liver biopsy in Nigerian female patients are presented. Both patients had extra-hepatic obstructive jaundice due to carcinoma of the head of pancreas. The diagnosis was made at post-mortem examination. Laparoscopic examination of the abdominal cavity may aid the diagnosis of extra-hepatic malignancy and obviate the need for a liver biopsy with the attendant risks.
