Percutaneous needle and open liver biopsies obtained from the same 34 patients with neonatal cholestasis within an interval of less than 3 wk were analyzed. The results of percutaneous and open biopsies were similar for the following criteria: portal fibrosis, bile duct proliferation, bile plug in portal area, focal liver cell necrosis. The results were different in both techniques for portal inflammation. In 8 of the 34 patients, a discordance between histological and final (surgery) diagnosis was observed; 5 of the 6 diagnostic errors made on needle biopsy concerned extrahepatic obstruction not recognized by histology.
