Group G streptococcal pharyngitis. Analysis of an outbreak at a college

Patients (68) with group G .beta.-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis were treated at a student health service during a 9-day period. The illness, probably spread among students by respiratory droplet, was indistinguishable from adult group A streptococcal pharyngitis, with a majority of students having exudate, fever and adenitis. Poor compliance with antibiotic treatment was associated with elevated antistreptolysin O titers and persistently positive throat culture results. Treatment did not affect overall duration of symptomatic illness.
