A rapid method for detection of Trichomonas vaginalis

A modification is described to the rapid method of detecting T. vaginalis in vaginal smears using acridine orange stain and fluorescence microscopy and it was evaluated as a routine procedure. The acridine orange method was positive in 7.3% of cases (80 of 1094) compared to 7.1% (76 of 1065) by culture. Direct wet preparation examination of 397 vaginal swabs gave 18 positives (4.5%) compared to 29 (7.3%) by acridine orange. Of the 11 additional positives by acridine orange, 6 were from swabs that had taken one or more days to reach the laboratory.
