Human plasma high density lipoproteins (HDL) subclasses, HDL2 and HDL3, were studied by the spin label method. Paramagnetic derivatives of stearic acid, androstane, cholesterol and pentadecane were used as spin labels. Terminal groups of hydrocarbon chains in the HDL3 phospholipid molecule were packed more regularly than in HDL2 and other classes of human plasma lipoproteins. Structural organization of the HDL particles, isolated from plasma of healthy persons differed from those of the patients with coronary heart disease. The Langmuir adsorption isoterm of spin-labeled stearic acid and androstane were characteristic for the HDL subclasses, isolated from persons with low and high level of HDL cholesterol. The ability of HDL2 and HDL3 to include spin-labeled cholesterol and the microviscosity of the structures surrounding this spin label depended on cholesterol content in the HDL.
