Effect of smoking on microcirculation in vessels of the bulbar conjunctiva in essentially healthy young subjects

The effect of smoking on vessels was studied in 81 men and 22 women with microscope. Observations were made before smoking, immediately after smoking 1 cigarette, and 15 min after smoking. Smoking caused changes in arteriole and venule diameter. Arteriole dilation and venule stenosis were observed in most subjects. Arteriole stenosis and venule dilation were observed less often, as were dilation or stenosis of arterioles and venules. These microvascular reactions developed immediately in response to smoking and disappeared within 15 min after smoking.
