Patients (22) with rheumatoid arthritis were studied from April-June 1978. All the patients had classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis (criteria of American Rheumatism Association). The patients were interviewed and examined during their stay in the hospital, and 1 yr later they answered a questionnaire. This was the basis for an analysis of the functional status of the patients during the stay and 1 yr later, the therapy and the patients' opinion about their illness and its treatment. The ambitions with regard to therapeutic results in advanced rheumatoid arthritis should be realistic and moderate.
