Septic arthritis and osteomyelitis of the hip in six mature dogs

Septic arthritis and osteomyelitis of the hip were diagnosed in 6 mature dogs (7 hips). The most common clinical signs were lameness, anorexia and lethargy. Periacetabular new-bone formation with concurrent destruction of the articular contours of the hip was the most consistent radiographic finding. Thorough debridement of the joint, including femoral head and neck excision, followed by systemic antibiotic therapy was effective in controlling infection and maintaining acceptable limb function in dogs that were surgically managed.
