The species and subspecies of Echinococcus are tabulated together with their intermediate and definitive hosts, main morphological features and geographical distribution. The epidemiology of E. granuhsus and E. multilocularis in Switzerland is reviewed; small proportions of domestic ungulates, especially cattle, are regularly infected with hydatid. Diagnosis and treatment of human hydatid infection and of Echinococcus in dogs are also discussed.
