Primary gastric impaction in the horse

Gastric impaction was diagnosed at surgery as the cause of colic in four horses. Medical therapy, including mineral oil, had been ineffective in resolving the clinical signs. The impactions were broken up by injecting distilled water or saline solution directly into the stomach. All 4 horses made an uncomplicated recovery and were back in full use within 8 weeks. A predisposing cause for the impaction was not found.
