Marine water in heavily polluted areas may contain a variety of carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds. The transferring of mussels from a clean area to a polluted one should prove useful in monitoring any given area for mutagenicity, and is not limited by the possibility that mussels may not grow spontaneously in that environment. It is possible to obtain data for a variety of areas with mussels coming from the same control group. The genetic effect with the same mussel samples in the host-mediated assay was much higher than in the assay with extracts in vitro.
