In this 3rd part of an investigation on cutaneous leishmaniasis in northern Afghanistan [see preceding abstract, etc.], lists are given of 14 species of Phlebotomus and 19 of Sergentomyia that were collected from 6 different ecological regions of the country. In plains regions the commonest species were usually P. papatasi (Scop.)., P. sergenti Parr. and P. chinensis Newst., followed by P. mongolensis , P. kandelakii Shchurenkova and S. sintoni Pringle; in mountainous regions, P. sergenti, P. chinensis and S. dentata (Sinton) were the commonest, followed by P. caucasicus Marts. P. caucasicus from rodent burrows, P. sergenti from living rooms and S. clydei (Sinton) and S. sintoni from rodent and lizard burrows were all found to be infected with promastigotes.
