Therapeutic diets in a psychiatric hospital

A survey of diet duration and reason for diet in the Argyll and Bute Hospital, Scotland, during 1981, indicated that many of the diets were of long duration and that no record remained as to the reason why; 60% of the diets were discontinued and the patients were relieved of their restrictions. As it is likely that the hospital is no different from other long-stay institutions, it is suggested that investigations in other such institutions would reveal more instances of protracted ineffective reducing diets and undocumented low-fat and gastric diets and that a decrease of the same order could be achieved.
