Patients in St. Hans Psychiatric Hospital were questioned about their satisfaction during hospitalization. A total of 517 questionnaires were distributed and 253 of these were returned (49%). More than 90% of the patients expressed satisfaction with the way in which they were admitted and treated. On the other hand, great dissatisfaction was expressed about the time the staff (particularly the doctors) had for patient contact. Only 50% felt that they had experienced particular contact with one particular member of the staff. One third were dissatisfied with the possibilities for occupation and more than 1/3 were dissatisfied with the possibilities for interview therapy. One third of the patients were dissatisfied with the medicine they received and, in particular, they considered that they recevied too much. One fourth of the patients considered that the environment was unsatisfactory. Patients in wards with several beds were dissatisfied with this and with the lack of possibilities for being alone. Between 15 and 20% of the patients had experienced treatment against their wills (hospitalization, restraint or forcible medication). Only a small proportion of the patients who had experienced interventions of this type were able to accept that these were necessary. Dissatisfaction among the patients who had been admitted against their wills or who were in closed departments was particularly great and, for many conditions, dissatisfaction was expressed by the majority of the patients concerned.
