Inhibition of basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion by an enkephalin analogue

The effect of a synthetic enkephalin analog (Sandoz FK33-824; (D-Ala2,MePhe4, Met(o)51-ol)enkephalin) on basal and submaximally stimulated gastric acid secretion was investigated in 6 healthy hypersecretors. Basal acid secretion was markedly inhibited by FK33-824. When gastric secretion was stimulated by a continuous i.v. infusion of 100 ng/kg FK33-824 h of pentagastrin, reduced acid output by 50%. I.v. naloxone reversed the subjective effects of FK33-824 but did not reverse the inhibitory effect on basal and stimulated acid secretion.
