The relationship between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections and the development of various viral antibodies were studied in successively taken sera from 5 renal kidney recipients. In all of the cases tested the infections were connected with the development of antibodies to immediate early antigens and then specific IgM and antibodies to various CMV early antigens. The increase of antibodies measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, CF complement-fixations and immunofluorescence for late CMV antigens were observed in samples taken from 2 patients. Based on serological findings, the relationship between CMV infections and quantity of blood received before transplantation was established.
