Physical fitness was assessed in 50 male recruits at the beginning, the middle and the end of 10 weeks of basic army training. Aerobic capacity was predicted indirectly from a timed 2.4-km run. Body fat was estimated from 3 skinfold measurements. Estimated VO2 max increased from 48.7 to 56.6 ml/kg min. Accompanying this increase was a decline in percentage body fat from 12.4 to 10.2%, with no change in total bodyweight.
