Dermatitis in horses and man caused by the straw itch mite

An outbreak of dermatitis affecting 12 horses and many animal handlers at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Florida University, in 1981 was traced to the abundance of Pyemotes tritici (Lagreze-Fossat & ontagne) in lucerne hay that had recently been delivered to the hospital. The cutaneous lesions were mainly papules developing on the areas of the body to which the mites had the easiest access, such as the trunk and arms of the handlers and the neck, withers and thorax of the horses. The lesions were not treated and the condition subsided within a few days of the lucerne hay being used up.
