Soviet Central Asian strains of Borrelia persica, a causal agent of tick-borne relapsing fever (TRF), behave differently upon inoculation into guinea pigs. They vary in their capacity to produce borreliemia, pyrogenicity, virulence and specificity of postinfection immunity. These differences may be quantitated. Characterization of the strains by this set of properties revealed the identity of the TIM strain from a TRF patient and the NP no. 3 strain from ticks from the biotope where the patient had contracted the infection. Both these strains could also be differentiated from a heterologous borrelia strain.
