Gangliosides in different regions of brains of small-for-date infants

Total gangliosides and the profile of individual ganglioside species were determined in different regions (i.e., cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla oblongata) of normal and small-for-date infants. Cerebrum from small-for-date infants showed a notable reduction in absolute value of total gangliosides. Distribution pattern of individual gangliosides indicated a significant reduction in the concentration if trisialogangliosides in cerebrum and cerebellum of low birth weight infants as compared to those of normal infants. These alterations in ganglioside profile might reflect functional maturity of developing brain.
